“Sam Stone” by Johnny Cash
It’s one of my favorite John Prine songs, and Cash does a good job with this cover.
This past week, I’ve really only been listening to two bands: Pavement and the Smiths. I just discovered the Smiths’ The Queen Is Dead (yeah, sometimes I’m really behind on these kind of things…), and I’m absolutely floored by how great the album is, especially “Frankly, Mr. Shankly.”
Frankly, Mr. Shankly, this position I’ve held
It pays my way and it corrodes my soul
Oh, I didn’t realise that you wrote poetry
I didn’t realise you wrote such bloody awful poetry, Mr. Shankly
Morrisey’s Mr. Shankly is almost as good as Dylan’s Mr. Jones. Almost.
“Stay Free” by the Clash
Today is my last first day of school because it’s the beginning of my senior year of college, and in honor of that, I present “Stay Free,” a song with one of my favorite verses about school:
We met when we were in school
Never took no shit from no one, we weren’t fools
The teacher says we’re dumb
We’re only having fun
We piss on everyone
In the classroom
My girlfriend Nadia moves to Boston today to go to Emerson College for grad. school. While thinking of a song to post for her about Boston, I immediately thought about “More Than a Feeling,” but I couldn’t bring myself to do it, so instead, here’s “I’m Shipping Up to Boston” by Dropkick Murphys.
More Boston-related videos soon.
